Oregon Trip 2005 - Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and Ferndale, CA
![]() |
On Thursday morning we took some some photos at Oregon's Harris Beach before leaving to go to California and the Prairie Creek Redwoods state park (No 25 on the map) and the beautiful Fern Canyon there. We arrived early (11 AM) and set up the trailer, had lunch. There were only about 10 campsites open at this time of year. Fern canyon was about 5 miles from our camp area as the crow flies, and there was a hiking trail that led there. But we drove (a one hour drive) out to Davidson Road, a narrow, one-lane road, and out to the Fern Canyon (where parts of the movie, "Jurassic Park" was filmed) to hike the canyon. It was really nice. Later we drove to see the redwoods and a very big redwood tree (over 21 ft dia) and a scenic redwood drive. Nice day! On Friday morning we awoke to fog, but by the time we departed (9 AM) is was nice and sunny. We drove to Ferndale (No. 26 on the map) where we stayed at the county fairgrounds. Had lunch, toured the town and then took a 100-mile loop route to the coast through Cpetown, Petrolia and Honeydew, and back through the redwoods (Humboldt Redwoods State Park). WOW! What a road. (see map below) One section was 1 mile long at an 18% grade. But there were spectacular views and it was such a remote area. The first part of out drive was through fog (sometimes quite heavy) but later it cleared. We didn't get too many photos, though. The drive was a real experience! Towards the end we took the Rockefeller drive through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. WONDERFUL! We the stopped at the town of Fortuna on the Eel River and went to the Eel River microbrewery to sample their brews. We had some fried squid along with the seven beers we tasted. It was all good. Then back to the trailer for dinner, TV watching, and bed. |
