Oregon Trip 2005 - Oregon Coast - Newport area
![]() |
Friday Morning, Sept. 30, we awoke to find it raining outside. Fortunately we had hooked up the truck and trailer the previous evening so it was no trouble for us to head out for the Oregon Coast. Our first destination being South Beach State Park at Newport, OR.(No. 21 on the map). It was still raining off and on so after lunch we waited for the rain to abate a bit before going into town (Newport) to look around. We found a microbrewery, Rogue, by the bridge and went in to sample some of their brews. We tried 8 different ones and liked them all, especially Old Crustacean (26 proof!) Later we toured the old waterfront area and visited a couple of galleries there. The rain lasted most of the afternoon. So for dinner we went back to the microbrewery for dinner and had cioppino and tried three more of their brews. Hit the spot! Saturday morning we woke to find the rain had stopped so we headed out to visit a couple of lighthouses in the area and the tide pools at Agate Beach. It was grey and sometimes foggy in the morning and the lighthouses didn't open for visits until noon, so we shopped a bit for groceries and gas and went to the docks and bought a fresh fish (ling cod) off a boat there. After taking the food items back to the trailer we returned to the Rogue Brewery for lunch and more beer tasting. Steve had a Kobe beef hamburger (delicious) and Yoshiko had a fresh grilled salmon sandwich (also delicious). We sampled 8 more different brews, all good, especially the Russian Imperial Stout (26 proof!). Back to the South Beach State Park to walk along the beach for a while and then to visit the lighthouses and the tide pools. It was a fun afternoon. And for dinner that night we enjoyed the fresh fish we purchased that day off the fishing boat. |
