Oregon Trip 2005 - Saratoga to Crater Lake
![]() |
We departed our home in Saratoga, CA on Thursday, September 15 and headed north to tour the state of Oregon. After traveling for 6 hours we stopped at the Sacramento River RV Park just outside of Redding, CA (No. 3 on the map) and spent the first night on the banks of the Sacramento River. The next day, Friday, Sept. 16, we continued north past Shasta Lake and later Mt. Shasta. Leaving the interstate at Weed, we headed up US-97 to Klamath Falls, OR where we took the scenic route up the west side of Klamath Lake, past Rocky Point and up to Crater Lake National Park. We set up camp for two nights at the Crater Lake Mazama Campground (No. 5 on the map) and then headed up the road for 7 miles to see the lake itself. It was rainy and snowy at the lake level and the lake itself was covered in clouds. We visited the historic Crater Lake lodge, which had recently (1995) been renovated. It was interesting to see the interior of the lodge and to look at the historic photographs of it and of the renovation process. After taking a few photos we went back to the campground for the evening. Next day, Saturday, Sept. 17, we awoke to find large puddles of water around our campsite from the night rains. But the weather was breaking up and there were spots of sun and blue sky above so we packed a lunch and headed out for a day of sightseeing at Crater Lake. At the lake level we found a lot of fresh snow on the ground, which, along with the ever-changing sky, made for some interesting photo opportunities. Needless to say, we did take a lot of photos of Crater Lake as we viewed it from all kind of different points around the crater itself. The only time we were deterred by rain was when we took the spur road to see the pinnacles. We did manage to get out a bit at the pinnacles, though, and did get a couple of photos or so. |
