From Saratoga Springs, NY we headed east across Vermont on scenic US 4 to New Hampshire where we visited a couple of Shaker villages, including the famous village at Canterbury (near site 3), and the Fanconia Notch State Park (site 4). The Franconia Notch is where the state's natural landmark, the "Old Man of the Mountain" (depicted in the photo above) is located. Unfortunately, and unbeknown to us, the landmark had collapsed just a couple of months before our arrival and no longer exists. We were sad to miss having seen it, and I'm sure the residents of New Hampshire are sad about its loss.
New Hampshire is a beautiful state and we were fortunate to have been there during the lupine festival. This was an unexpected treat for us and there are several photos included on this site of the lupines at their prime.
