Turn the key both directions. There's no universal standard for which way a key turns to unlock a door. Even if you know which way is "unlock," turning the key further toward the "locked" direction sometimes causes the lock to unjam. If you can get the key to turn a short distance past the full locked position, rotate it back the other way in a quick, smooth motion and you may overcome the jam.
One of the worst things that can happen at a party or large family gathering is not having access to the bathroom because the door was accidentally locked from the inside. There are two major types of doorknob locks; push button and turning tab. Push button locks have a button on the inside of the door that, when pushed, locks the door. A hole is on the outside knob. The turning tab lock has a tab on the inside that locks when it is turned to the left or right. The outside knob has a slot. Fortunately both of these bathroom door locks are easy to open.
Push or pull the door as you turn the key. With many older doors, you need to pressure the door as you fiddle with the key, as the warped door is bending the lock at an awkward angle. Try applying pressure in each direction: up, down, toward you, and away from you. Use as much force as you can without losing your balance once the door opens. If you are using a friend's key, call and ask him about it. He is likely to know the door's idiosyncrasies.

To unlock this mechanism, you will need to take a wire paperclip and open it. Alternatively, you could use a wire clothes hanger as well. Take the wire and insert it into the hole located in the center of the doorknob. Then, push the tip of the paperclip or clothes hanger straight into the hole and try to keep it as straight as possible. If you keep it straight, you should feel the lock on the other side of the door. Apply pressure until the lock pops and you are able to turn the doorknob.
Some of these types of locks have a small slot on the round flange that abuts up to the door. You insert a small metal tool in there and it releases the lock. I would call your local Home Depot or Lowe's - I'm sure they could help you. Knowing what brand lock it is should help, too. This should be stamped on the door lock. Hope you get it unlocked! :) I have used a flexible driver's license before to get a door unlocked but this will only work of the lock is facing the correct direction - it's just like in the movies, you slide it between the door & the jamb and run it up & down until the lock releases. You have to have the laminated ID type card, though. It has to be flexible enough to bend.
Ok I know this is going to sound crazy but the same thing happened to me and I got the top to an ink pen like a BIC, blue plastic top and I straightened out the end like a flathead small screwdriver and put it in the lock and turned it. I guess a small screwdriver would work too, LOL. The lock is like a screw or something inside and you have to turn it to unlock it, hope this helps.
Tips If you can pick your front door lock, burglars can too. Use the deadbolt if present, or replace your locks with more secure examples. If you hear or feel the lock open, but the door won't open, there could be a deadbolt or handle lock on the other side of the door.

The lock on a bedroom door is designed for privacy and not for security or keeping intruders out. This is fortunate in the event that you need to open a locked bedroom door because in an emergency, a high-security lock would be hard to hack. If you have small children in your home, it is not uncommon for children to lock themselves in a bedroom, so it can be handy to know how to bypass a lock. Here is a convenient, step-by-step guide that will show you how to pick the lock on the bedroom door quickly and easily.
For this type, insert a flathead screwdriver into the slot located on the outer knob. Again, you will need to insert the screwdriver as straight as possible. Once it’s fully in, turn the screwdriver slowly clockwise. You will need to turn the screwdriver about a quarter of the way, in order to open the door. If the screwdriver turns more than that and the door still does not open, your screwdriver probably did not fit into the internal slot designed to open the door, so you may need to try again or get a screwdriver of a different size
First, you'll need to determine what type of lock is installed on the bedroom door. Generally speaking, there are two types of locks that are used for bedroom doors or interior doors. The first type uses a push-in button in the knob to lock the door from the inside. The second type of lock uses a twist-button that is turned right or left to work. You'll be able to distinguish between the two lock types by the type of slot, or hole, which is on the outside doorknob.
These tips from Instructables user DIYHacksAndHowTos will get almost any common indoor locked door open again in a snap, and all it takes is a paper clip. He walks through most common simple locks, like the dreaded privacy lock, and shows you how to open each one. Most of them aren't designed for security, just a little privacy or discouragement, so they're easy to open. With privacy locks, you just need to get the paper clip in deep enough to touch the pressure plate inside, and the door can be opened by twisting the knob.
If you've ever accidentally locked yourself out of a room in your home—as in, one of those push-button or twist-privacy locks that most bedroom and bathroom doors have—you know it can be a pain to open them again. If you have a paper clip however, getting back in is no problem.
Whether you're looking to open that mysterious closet, flee from cops, or simply had the unfortunate luck of getting stuck in a strange bathroom, here's your escape route. Stay calm and read on.
Know when to apply force. If you hear a click when the key turns, the door is probably unlocked but jammed, and a few thumps might open it. If the lock is jammed, hitting the lock several times might help after lubrication to help shift the sticky tumblers.
